Title: Interkulturelle literarische Begegnung. Eine Reflexion über das Eigene /das Fremde

Abstract

This article is a study of intercultural communication between students from two partner universities, Alpen-Adria University in Klagenfurt (Austria), and Gaston Berger University in Saint-Louis, Senegal. Two courses with similar themes – one at the Alpen-Adria-University of Klagenfurt, and the other at Gaston Berger University – offered students from two different continents the opportunity to contribute to the literature by discussing their interpretations of two literary works: So Long a Letter by Mariama BA and Blendung by Elias CANETTI. If we consider the methods of approach of students, we notice that they thoughtfully start up a process of intercultural encounter. In other words, based on their specificities, they begin a cross-cultural communication and are aware of the effect that their understanding of others could have. As a result, they try – in both countries – to understand as much as possible the other side by putting into perspective their positions on its culture. The comparative interpretation of literature from different backgrounds can be seen as a contribution to universal literature. According to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, universal literature, as a global literary network, develops from the transnational and cross-cultural communication of authors and critics.

Résumé

Cet article est l’étude d’une communication interculturelle entre les étudiants de deux universités partenaires, l'Université Alpen-Adria de Klagenfurt (Autriche) et l'Université Gaston Berger (UGB) Saint-Louis (Sénégal). Deux cours à thématiques similaires, organisés dans les deux pays, ont offert la possibilité à des étudiants originaires de deux continents différents d'échanger sur leurs interprétations de deux œuvres littéraires, Une si longue Lettre de Mariama BÂ et Blendung d’Elias CANETTI, et d’apporter leur contribution à la littérature universelle. Si l'on considère les méthodes d'approche des étudiants, on peut retenir qu'ils s’engagent, de manière réfléchie et consciente dans un processus de rencontre interculturelle. En d'autres termes, ils initient, chacun dans sa spécificité, une communication transculturelle et sont conscients de l'effet que pourrait avoir leur compréhension des autres. En conséquence, ils essaient - dans les deux pays - de comprendre autant que possible l'autre partie, c'est-à-dire de relativiser les positions sur sa culture. L'interprétation comparative de littératures d’horizons différents peut être considérée comme une contribution à la littérature universelle, car, selon Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, la littérature universelle, en tant que réseau littéraire mondial, se développe à partir de la communication transnationale et transculturelle des auteurs et des critiques.
